England's Euro 2024 campaign begins with a win

Southgate's side beat Serbia 1-0 in Gelsenkirchen

England got their UEFA EURO 2024 campaign off to a winning start with a 1-0 victory over Serbia in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.

Gareth Southgate's side were made to work hard for the three points, but a second-half goal from Raheem Sterling proved to be enough to secure the victory.

England started the game brightly and had the better of the chances in the opening exchanges. However, they were unable to find a way past the Serbian defence in the first half.

The Three Lions continued to press after the break, and they eventually got their reward in the 68th minute when Sterling pounced on a loose ball in the area and fired home.

Serbia pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but England held on to secure a valuable three points.

The win puts England top of Group C, with Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia completing the group.

England's next game is against Denmark in Copenhagen on Wednesday.
